As in previous years, McAfee and Norton faced-off for top honors in PC Desktop Security category. This year the award goes to Symantec for its Norton Internet Security 2007 suite, which took in 42 percent of your votes. This latest version of Norton provides protection for up to three PCs and lays out the protection framework for spyware, viruses and worms while also offering protection from hackers and identity theft.

The biggest name in PC security just edged out ZoneAlarm as your choice to protect your PC online. Norton Internet Security 2006 provides solid antivirus protection, uncovers weak Windows passwords and browser settings, and prevents rogue sites from changing your home page. Internet Security 2007 doesn't add much in the way of new features, but it does drop the price to match the competition's.

Symantec continues to polish and enhance its flagship Norton Internet Security suite. The 2008 edition adds full-scale password and identity management, and its new BrowserDefender technology offers even stronger defense against Web-based attacks. Borrowing a page from Norton 360's playbook, NIS 2008 now offers a built-in, multilayered help system. For the multicomputer home, it now includes a network map and optional remote monitoring of other NIS 2008 installations. Antispam and parental controls remain second-class citizens, present only if you install the optional Add-On Pack.
